MALLARI
Mallari as known to everybody is a musical form played on Nagaswaram at the outset of any deity’s procession. It is in a way, a signature tune and anyone can easily understand that the temple diety has commenced the rounds. The form and compositions of Mallari are generally believed to be the off-shoots of ‘Prabhandham’. Even though there are possibilities that the word “ Mallari” may have a tamil origin, we cannot say from which language it originally is. “ Malla ” means wrestler or Palanquin bearer and “ Ri ” means the voluminous sound produced by the palanquin bearer when they carry it. To equate this sound, the work mallari came to be used particularly in temples. An agama “Dhvajarohana vidhi” speaks about a tune called Mallara that should be sounded when the deity starts from its abode. The Mallara might have by the course of time, corruptly gained the name “Mallari”. Interestingly, there is a raga called Mallara a janya of Kharaharapriya (22 nd Mela) with the scal...
Great news. A blessing in disguise for all of us in Bangalore who have not been fortunate to see NJN perform here. The CD is a boon. Hoping NJN would put Bangalore on her tour map soon.
ReplyDeleteI could sing thrice in bangalore. Happy singing there and would definitely love to sing there more and more. Coming to Uduppi on 8th Dec. See you all there
ReplyDeleteWe will ensure not to miss the opportunity this time. It would be helpful to us to know the venue. If it is not too late and not too much to ask for, we will be grateful and blessed to listen to rendition of 'Ni samAnamevaru LErani' (Shubha Panthuvaraali) - GNB.
ReplyDeleteMGM College, Uduppi - is the venue. I will try my maximum to sing this, or any GNB Krithi
ReplyDeleteThis time around we did everything to ensure that we did not miss the concert. We arrived in Udipi early and visited Sri Krishna Math as we had time to spare. We were in the MGM auditorium at 2:30 pm. After listening to some excellent performance by two well-known artists, we were waiting for the 6 pm event. Our hearts sank when Professor announced it would take a some more time. Then our expectation was rewarded by Nandini and troupe appearing on the stage to a rousing welcome. Professor praised that this concert would be a grand finale to the three day Kanaka Dasa music festival. It really was.
ReplyDeleteRight from the start (Ninnu Joochi) it was a captivating and enthralling full-fledged concert, the likes of which one rarely sees in a life time. We were rewarded with a full three hours of exemplary alapanas and kritis. The audience too learnt a lot in the event, in particular Takka ragam as a Janya ragam of mAyamALava gowLa and a vivid first hand display of to how put Kanda Chapu (please forgive and correct us if we are wrong on the talam). We guessed the Sri Purandara kriti towards the end was our requested Shubha Pantuvarali, (again forgive us if we have not discerned the ragam correctly). You did full justice for your accompanists by giving sufficient performance time when the mridangmam and ghatom avardanams were well applauded. When the Thillana was sung it was heart rending for us all to realize the concert was coming to a close. On the whole it was a great rewarding evening day for us.
Thanks a lot and blessing me. This is a reward for me indeed. The chaappu talam is Viloma chappu (the reverse of misra chappu in 4 + 3 combination) Please excuse me for not singing the GNB Krithi. Unfortunately i coudnt include it. Once again thankyou for making your presence and blessing me for the concert. I expected to meet you after the concert :) will meet soon.
