Navarathri Concert series…
Innikkenna main?? Nagumovaa?? Pakkaalaavaa??
The first thing the organizer would have to say as soon as we reach the concert venue will be… please sing popular pieces ( inge popular pieces porum sir..ethukku veenaa…)…since the audience are more used to it!!
But when we think deeper, the reality is even if we sing those “ So- Called” popular pieces, only 10 or 15 people end up listening to the concert .
SO WHY SHOULD THE MUSICIAN SACRIFICE THE STANDARD OF THE CONCERT BY SINGING THE SAME PIECES WHICH WOULD HAVE BEEN SUNG AT THE VENUE ON ALL THE PREVIOUS DAYS ??? ( I am referring to Navarathri festival) .
As the “so – called” popular pieces are limited in number ( say 10 or 15) most of the artists are forced to repeat the pieces which would have been already performed at the venue
I personally feel, if this trend continues, a decade from now will have listeners who unfortunately, will believe that these are the only pieces that can be performed in a concert. Unless, we the musicians take the responsibility, to perform without compromising on this issue, how will other hundreds of compositions of the Trinity, Swathi Tirunal, Papanasam Sivan etc get popularized ???
I also feel that if a concert is performed in the way it should be, (including the not- so popular krithis also) the listeners will enjoy it in the same way they enjoy a Vaathaapi, a Nagumo or a Pakkaala
This does not mean that all the concert venues are of this kind. But a lion’s share of the venues, are unfortunately of this kind only! The silver lining is that even at such places there are rasikas who would love to listen to ragas like Dhanyasi & Sahana. This is what motivated me to express my opinion in this fashion !
Yes,definitely different Ragaas/Krithis to be sung but at the same time certain Krithis though oft repeated evoke a deep sense of Devotion in the minds of habitual listeners to the extent of swelling up their eyes moist. The Artistes, many though are often prone to stick to their own selection of Ragaas/Krithis, if they have to reach out to the Rasikas, they have to sing atleast a few popular ones. Otherwise the whole concert ends on a sour note with no Take aways for the poor listeners who invest their precious time too to provide Audience Support to the Artistes.
